Huge Savings on Last Minute 5-Star Safari

Sometimes it pays to wait until the last minute to make travel plans. It certainly does if you can arrange to take family safarithis Heart of Botswana safari in the next couple of months. By traveling before October 15th, you can save $1,000 per person. If you can't quite get away by then but could later on in October or sometime in November, you can save $500 per person.

Having just recently visited this area, I can tell you, it's a  part of the world you should definitely visit in your lifetime and--with such a substantial savings--now's as good a time as any. The 7-night trip includes game drives on land and on water (by mokoro, a dug-out canoe.) Croatia Now

yachting in Croatia

I’ve been to this entrancing country twice and can’t wait to go back again. Not sure what’s pulling me more—the seriously stunning scenery, the medieval architecture, the beautiful people or the memory of the octopus salad I had at a small café in the walled city of Dubrovnik.

If you can manage to get away this month (September 15-26), here’s an opportunity that I believe is worth rearranging whatever you have to in order to go. ROW Adventures is taking 16 people on a private culinary-focused yachting trip along the Dalamatian coast AND they’re knocking $800 off the price if booked by Sept. 6. And this is an offer for the readers of FarewellTravels only.

The trip begins with two nights in Dubrovnik and is followed by eight days aboard a 100 foot yacht with eight private cabins (and private bathrooms) calling at several islands including Korcular, Hvar, Vis and Brac. The last night is spent in the coastal city of Split.

Along the way, you’ll hike, swim and explore villages, vineyards, lavender fields and olive groves. The trip is being led by Row founder Peter Grubb, who will provide a behind-the-scene look into this culturally and historically rich country (which the company has been leading tours in since the late 80s). Rates include all meals, entrance fees, private guides and accommodations.

Best Time To Go To Maine?

Ask anyone who travels to Maine regularly and they'll have a favorite time of year. Mine? When all the crowds start heading south back to the daily grind towards the end of summer. The traffic dies down, you can get a reservation at the best restaurants, no more lines at attractions, shops have sales. And...there's a nice nip in the air.

Add to that, considerable savings at some of the hotels and inns and you've got a nice getaway to look forward to. Through September 23rd, the Captain Lord Mansion, which is right in Kennebunkport (less than a two- hour drive from Boston) is offering considerable mid-week savings, up to $110 off peak-season room rates. You can stay in the honeymoon suite for $369 as opposed to the peak price of $479. Or choose one of the deluxe rooms that normally go for $399 per night, but will cost $299 per night. The standard rooms drop from $299 to $249.

Looking ahead to mid-October, the inn has its "Serenity Season" Rates, which are even bigger savings (as much as $150 off peak season rates). They are good for mid-week visits and some weekends. Check availability online and make your reservations asap. From experience, I know that this inn--which was designed by Captain Lord, a wealthy merchant and shipbuilder in the early 1800s--fills quickly.

Late Summer Savings at an All-Inclusive Vermont Family Resort

When my husband and IVermont family resort first discovered Tyler Place, a great calm came over us. Our daughter was in the height of her very-active-and-needs-to-be-watched-every-minute years. At the same time, we craved activity ourselves, but more of the cycling, tennis, fine dining and socializing variety. This northern Vermont family resort satisfied all our needs so much that we wound up going back a week every summer for five years.

If you've got young children who aren't on the school calendar yet, you can take advantage of enormous savings by visiting in early September (between the 4th and 11th). Their prices, which are all-inclusive (meaning not only meals, but an amazing array of activities for everyone in the family) can be as much as 25% off their peak season rates.

Their children's programs are for newborns up to 16-years old and take place twice a day, from 8:30 am -1:30 pm and 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm. This allows plenty of time for  adults to pursue their own activities, but at the same time, relax and enjoy family-time together every afternoon. Here's a direct link to the September savings page at Tyler Place Family Resort. While you're there, check out the early season savings for 2011.

Greek island

Escape to a Greek Island AFTER the crowds are Gone

If you want to really enjoy the spectacular beauty of the Greek Islands, go in the off-season when the crowds are gone. The Aegialis Hotel & Spa, on the island of Amorgos, has created a special deal for the readers of FarewellTravels.com. Between September 15, 2010 and April 1, 2011, they are offering a savings of about 20% on double rooms (which include breakfast and one other meal every day) PLUS they are picking up the tab for the fast ferry between Piraeus and Amorgos (the ferry normally would cost 62 Euros--at press time, about $75--a piece round trip).

The setting of this hotel couldn't be more romantic: set high above the bay of Aegiali, surrounded by mountain ranges and the Aegean Sea.
